I think I can speak for most of us when I say, “2020 sucked!” Between COVID 19, racial unrest, and political controversy, this was one of the worst years most people have ever experienced. With such a difficult year behind us, we may not even know where to start in order to crush the year ahead.
Here are three ideas which should help you.
Put the past behind you. The past is the past and there’s nothing you can do about it. Whether you lost money, lost a relationship, or are dealt with some other unexpected loss, the New Year marks a great opportunity to begin the process of looking forward and leaving the past behind you. Make a commitment to yourself that old patterns and old behaviors have no place in your new life and be committed to distancing yourself from them.
Revisit unmet goals from the previous year. The best things about not meeting your goals from last year, is that you have an opportunity to meet them again this time around. Revisit last year’s vision board, sticky notes, journal entries, or other resources where you jotted down goals that you were unable to meet due to unexpected circumstances. Then re-strategize how you plan to make up for these goals this year. I recommend starting this ASAP.
Take what you learned from 2020 to make 2021 the best year yet. Most of us learned how to better budget, spend more time with our children, and navigate the telehealth /telework world in ways that we never been able to before. Did you learn other things as well? How can you make what worked for you last year even better during this year. After all, you can bring what you learned from last year out of necessity, into this year which holds more promises and opportunity. Make it a great year or not, the choice is yours.
After 2020, it’s hard to even imagine a worse year. But life is about living the best life that you can. Therefore, we shouldn’t just be trying to make 2020 better than 2021, we should be trying to make 2021 our best year yet. Hopefully these strategies can help you get there.
